A student's ability to understand what he reads is vital to his success in all academics. As a teacher, the best thing you can do is equip your students with strategies that help them improve reading comprehension skills.  There are research-based strategies that have proven to impact students’ literacy skills.  Through the modeling, practice, and use of these strategies, teachers provide students with the tools that they need to increase their literacy skills.

Teachers should rely on their knowledge of students, their subject matter, and their situations to identify the most appropriate instructional strategies. This wiki offers resources to support the featured strategies, but know that the collection is not exhaustive; there are additional effective strategies to help students learn.  But, this wiki is a place to start. Simply click on the posters below to access resources.  And, in the end, effective pedagogy involves a variety of interacting components, and discerning teachers are able to match instructional strategies to students’ needs.
